The stage is set for a can’t-miss Saturday at the ATX Open.
Stadium play begins at 1 PM with a headline semifinal: No. 4 seed and Texas Longhorn Peyton Stearns takes on Australia’s Kimberly Birrell. Birrell has thrived in the Texas heat, shining in both singles and doubles. Stearns has earned her spot the hard way, battling through two three-set matches to reach the final four.
Friday night, she delivered a gritty two-and-a-half-hour performance under the lights. After cruising through the first set, she dug deep to close it out 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 on her fourth match point. The crowd was on its feet, and Matthew McConaughey was courtside to witness the moment before sharing a post-match exchange with Stearns.
In the second semifinal, fan favorite Taylor Townsend continues her run after a comeback win over Rebeka Masarova, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. With her son Aidan cheering her on, Townsend raised her level when it mattered most.
She now faces Dallas native Ashlyn Krueger, who knocked out defending champion Yue Yuan and hasn’t dropped a set all week. It sets up a high-stakes, all-American showdown with a spot in the final on the line.
After singles, the doubles semifinal delivers another marquee matchup. Top seeds Storm Hunter and Townsend face Kimberly Birrell and Caty McNally. With Townsend and Birrell pulling double duty, expect fast hands at the net, bold returns, and plenty of intensity.
