The ATX Open is the first WTA tournament Anhelina Kalinina has played as the No. 1 seed, and she is living up to that top billing, having lost just eight games in two matches to reach the quarterfinals.
On Wednesday, she won her second match in as many days, defeating Camila Osorio 6-1 6-2.
A finalist at the WTA 1000 event in Rome last season, Kalinina is through to her first quarterfinal of the year.
On Friday, she’ll face Diane Parry, who was a 6-3 6-3 winner on Wednesday over Kamilla Rakhimova. This is the second quarterfinal of the season for the 21-year-old Frenchwoman after she reached the last eight at Auckland in January.
An all-Chinese quarterfinal is set for Friday following straight sets wins by both No. 8 seed Yuan Yue and Wang Yafan.
Yuan was tested by American Taylor Townsend in a 6-3 7-6(5) win while Wang advanced comfortably with a 6-2 6-2 win over Emiliana Arango.
When they meet Friday, both Yuan and Wang will be vying for a spot in their second semifinal of the young season. Yuan reached the final four as a qualifier in her second event of the season at Hobart, Australia, while Wang was a semifinalist earlier this month at Hua Hin, Thailand.
In doubles, No. 4 seed Tereza Mihalikova & Yanina Wickmayer became the first team to reach the semifinals with a 4-6 6-2 10-2 win over Peyton Stearns & Sloane Stephens.
