Third seed Danielle Collins overcame her arthritis and wild card Katie Volynets to advance to the quarterfinals with a 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-0 victory. The 22-year-old Volynets broke Collins at 4-4 in the second set to serve for the match, but a barrage of winners from 30-year-old Collins never let Volynets reach match point. Collins’ problem-solving skills and experience kicked in as she dominated the second-set tiebreak and the deciding set.

After a rain delay at 3-3, Anastasija Sevastova roared back to win nine of the next 11 games to upset second seed Sloane Stephens for her first Top 50 win since beating Coco Gauff in 2021. Sevastova is playing her second WTA Tour-level event after giving birth to daughter Alexandra in December 2022, and has reached the quarterfinals in both for a 4-1 record this year.

With sixth seed Wang Xiyu’s 6-1, 6-2 win over Darja Semenistaja, three Chinese players are through to the quarterfinals for the first time at a WTA Tour event in the U.S., only the second time outside Asia and the 12th time globally. Wang joins compatriots eighth seed Yuan Yue and unseeded Wang Yafan in the quarterfinals.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova staved off a tenacious Sachia Vickery to win a tough three-setter in the late-night match, 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-5. A three-time title winner on the WTA Tour, she is through to her first quarterfinal since Prague last summer and is bidding to reach her first semifinal since Hobart in January 2019.
