Peyton’s Perfect Day: A Champion’s Tour of Austin
March 2, 2026
It was a double-duty Sunday for Taylor Townsend, who competed in both the singles and doubles finals. The doubles championship marked her 20th career WTA doubles final — and notably, her first appearance in a WTA singles final on the same day.
With the 6-3, 6-4 victory, Townsend secured her 12th career doubles title. Partnering with Australia’s Storm Hunter, who claimed her 10th career doubles crown, the top-seeded duo once again showed why both have reached World No. 1 in doubles. Their chemistry was evident all week, earning them the fan nickname “StormTown.”
Between them, the pair own three Grand Slam doubles titles. Townsend captured Wimbledon in 2024 and the Australian Open in 2025, while Hunter won the 2022 US Open mixed doubles title — championship pedigree that showed in the biggest moments in Austin.
Across the net stood third seeds Eudice Chong and Liang En Shuo, who were the first team to secure a place in the final after defeating second seeds Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara in straight sets. Over the past six months, Chong and Liang have captured three WTA 125 titles and advanced to their second WTA 250 final together.
But in the final, the top seeds proved too strong. Hunter and Townsend controlled the critical points and closed out the match on their fourth match point to lift the trophy in Austin, capping a dominant week and adding another chapter to the growing StormTown story.
Townsend leaves Austin with two trophies and renewed momentum. Her run to the singles final is projected to move her nearly 30 spots up the rankings and back inside the Top 90, strengthening her position for direct entry into this summer’s Grand Slam main draws.
