THREE OF THIS SEASON’S TITLE WINNERS AMONG INAUGURAL ATX OPEN SEEDS

One Week Until Opening Round of Austin WTA 250

AUSTIN (Feb. 20, 2023) – The seeds are set for next week’s inaugural ATX Open which will be held at Austin’s Westwood Country Club. 

The eight seeds include three players who have won WTA titles this season – No. 3 Anastasia Potapova (Linz champion), No. 7 Lauren Davis (Hobart) and No. 8 Alycia Parks (Lyon). 

Davis and Parks are two of the four seeded Americans. They will be joined by No. 5 Danielle Collins, the 2022 Australian Open runner-up, and No. 6 Sloane Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion. 

The ATX Open No. 1 seed will be five-time WTA finalist Magda Linette who reached the semifinals at last month’s Australian Open. Second seed will be Shuai Zhang who reached the quarterfinals or better at six events in 2022. Rounding out the seeds will be No. 4 Anhelina Kalinina who has reached five quarterfinals in the last 12 months.

A seeding is awarded to those with the eight best rankings among the 32-player field. They will be spread to the draw to prevent them from player another seed prior to the tournament’s quarterfinals. 

The title contenders for the ATX Open are certainly not limited to the seeds alone. In fact, in 2022, unseeded players went on to win the title at 20 WTA tournaments. 

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, is among those who will enter the tournament without a seeding. Former University of Texas standout Peyton Stearns, the 2022 NCAA Champion, will also be unseeded as she competes at a WTA Tour event for the first time after opening 2023 by going 16-2 with two titles at ITF events. 

“If you looked at our full player field without consulting the rankings, I think you would find it difficult to separate eight players from the rest of the pack,” said Tournament Director Christo van Rensburg. “The strength of this field is a strong indication that we can expect highly competitive matches throughout the week, from the opening round until the championship.”

Main draw play at the ATX Open begins Monday, Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. The first six days of the tournament will feature separate day and night sessions with multiple matches in each session. The action culminates with the finals on Sunday, March 5, with the singles final slated for 2 p.m. before the doubles championship match at 4 p.m.
