Main draw play began Monday at the ATX Open where the singles action saw one upset and a pair of favorites prevail.
The fifth seed, Diane Parry of France, was efficient in a 6-3 7-6(4) win over compatriot Jessika Ponchet. The 21-year-old Parry fired 11 aces while not dropping serve in the 90-minute victory.
Eighth seed Yuan Yue battled from behind to defeat Australia’s Arina Rodionova. Yuan dropped the first set but from 3-all in the second set, she won nine of the final 10 games to secure a 3-6 6-3 6-1 win.
Wang Yafan was the first player to take out a seed at this year’s ATX Open, downing No. 4 Lucia Bronzetti 7-6(5) 6-4. Though she was only broken twice, Bronzetti faced consistent pressure on her serve, with Wang having 12 break chances during the match.
Camila Osorio, the 2019 US Open Junior champion, defeated Alizé Cornet in the nightcap, 6-3 6-2.
In doubles play, with the crowd firmly behind them, former Longhorn Peyton Stearns teamed with Sloane Stephens to rally after losing the first set to claim a 1-6 6-3 10-5 victory over Samantha Murray Sharan and Jessika Ponchet.
